Viva The Tamale Lady

Posted: October 14, 2008

Often called The Patron Saint of SF Hipsters, The well renown Tamale Lady is actually someone I look forward to seeing just about every time I visit San Francisco.

It’s about tamale

I think she travels about San Francisco’s Mission District, but I’ve always caught her at one of my favorite spots, Zeitgeist. Zeitgeist is a great dive/biker (meaning bike messenger in this case) bar in The Mission, with a nice atmosphere, a healthy dose of attitude and a good mix of people. But what really makes it good, on nights when you can get them, are the tamales.

Sure, they’re not good for you. They sort of greasy and often over spiced, but they are the perfect compliment to just about any beer or ale you’d find and when you’re talking gut bomb, they can’t be beat. I find them pretty damn delicious myself. What makes them really special is the spectacle that comes along with them. When Virginia Ramos, The Tamale Lady, comes in with her spicy treats the whole place lights up. She says she makes her tamales with love and there is certainly something to that.

The bottom line

If dive bars, good people and great homemade tamales are you thing, be sure and head on down to Zeitgeist on a chilly San Francisco evening. With any luck Virginia will be there with some good food and lots of love for you.
